Youngkin’s Response to Hurricane Helene’s Aftermath
As recovery efforts ramp up in Southwest Virginia following the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Helene, Governor Glenn Youngkin emphasized his stance against attributing the storm’s intensity to climate change. His focus remains on immediate relief, urging residents to reach out to FEMA for support and assistance with federal recovery funding applications.
The hurricane, which brought heavy rainfall and tornadoes to the region, has caused significant damage. Youngkin highlighted the establishment of regional centers by FEMA and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, aiming to assist residents in filling out forms necessary for the Major Disaster Declaration.
The destruction is widespread, with 519 homes damaged and 83 businesses affected. In the aftermath, authorities are expecting these numbers to rise. Youngkin stressed the importance of the ongoing process, stating, “Many people don’t know how to fill out these forms. Getting them the help that they need is critically important.”
Power outages continue to plague the region, with approximately 13,700 residents still without electricity. Efforts are underway to restore services, including the use of helicopters to deliver telephone poles to remote areas. Despite significant progress, some cell towers remain unfixed, and water systems are still under a boil advisory.
Infrastructure and Community Challenges
Youngkin reported that the storm had left two primary roads and 52 secondary roads impassable, severely disrupting daily life. US Route 58 has been notably affected, with about a 1.5-mile stretch remaining “absolutely impossible” to traverse.
Schools in many counties have been closed or delayed, and federal waivers have been sought to extend meal services to all children. Over 40,000 meals have been distributed, supported by grassroots initiatives and the efforts of a medical reserve corps.
Key community challenges include:
- Replacement of water pumps for well users
- Distribution of medication and medical supplies
- Rebuilding critical infrastructure
Youngkin remains optimistic about the recovery, vowing to prevent the region from being forgotten and promising that Southwest Virginia will emerge stronger than before.
Climate Change Debate and Financial Concerns
When questioned about climate change, Youngkin urged people to stay focused on the current crisis rather than be distracted by political debates. Despite acknowledging climate change as a threat in the past, his current priority is providing a “pathway back to hope” for affected residents.
FEMA’s Deanne Criswell highlighted the increase in water damage resulting from warmer waters due to climate change. This observation aligns with the state’s past use of carbon-market revenues to aid disaster relief.
In 2022, Virginia allocated $29 million from the carbon market to support residents, although Youngkin has since withdrawn from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, labeling it a “hidden tax”. This decision has sparked debate over funding sources for future relief efforts.
Lawmakers are considering a special session to appropriate unused funds for additional relief. Youngkin has yet to decide on convening such a session, emphasizing the need to assess the region’s requirements thoroughly.

Ignoring climate change won’t make it go away, Youngkin. Let’s tackle the root causes!

Are there any plans to improve infrastructure to withstand future hurricanes? Our roads can’t keep disappearing!

Appreciate the focus on recovery, but shouldn’t we also prepare for future storms?

Why ignore the climate change link? It’s like saying my diet has nothing to do with my weight! 😂

How can we ensure that the affected communities get long-term support, not just quick fixes?

Thank you, Governor Youngkin, for prioritizing immediate aid and not getting caught up in politics!

Isn’t it risky to dismiss climate change when it could be impacting these disasters? 🤔
