Evacuations as Wildfires Threaten Athens
The Greek capital is under threat as wildfires encroach on towns and villages. People are being urged to leave their homes as flames advance, with the situation growing dire around Athens.
On Monday, authorities mandated the evacuation of hospitals, a monastery, and several communities. This fierce blaze, fought by hundreds of firefighters, adds to a summer where Greece has endured record-breaking temperatures.
The fire is spreading on two fronts, some of which are inaccessible mountainous areas northeast of Athens. Vassilis Kikilias, the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister, highlighted the challenges faced in these regions.
Despite exhaustive efforts, the fires have spread quickly, reaching Mount Penteli. A fire brigade official noted the rapid advance despite overnight efforts.
Massive Firefighting Efforts Unfold
Authorities are grappling with an extremely hazardous fire that has been raging for over 20 hours. Kikilias mentioned the dramatic conditions, including strong winds, complicating firefighting efforts.
Evacuations included a children’s hospital, a military hospital, two monasteries, and a children’s home. Many areas and suburbs of Athens were also evacuated, with three hospitals on alert for potential injuries.
The firefighting force is substantial, with 670 firefighters, 27 specialized teams, and over 80 armed forces members deployed. They are supported by more than 180 vehicles and over 30 water-dropping aircraft.
The blaze, with flames reaching up to 25 meters, spread rapidly due to gale-force winds. This speed and intensity have created a critical situation, as highlighted by fire brigade spokesperson Vassilis Vathrakogiannis.
Rescue and Relief Efforts
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis returned to Athens from Crete to oversee the emergency response. Efforts are focused on preventing a repeat of the 2018 tragedy in Mati, where 104 people perished in a wildfire.
The local police have been instrumental in assisting with evacuations, with many residents taking shelter overnight. Reports indicate that two firefighters suffered minor injuries, and several civilians were treated for smoke inhalation.
