Understanding Global Climate Change Psychology
The threat of climate change is not confined to any single region; it is a global challenge demanding action across individual, social, and systemic levels. Research into climate change mitigation has largely been limited to WEIRD countries, limiting the applicability of findings worldwide. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for effective climate policy.
The International Collaboration to Understand Climate Action has involved 258 researchers, gathering data from 63 countries. With over 59,000 eligible participants, the study aimed to test 11 interventions promoting climate action. These interventions covered beliefs, policy support, social media engagement, and practical environmental actions.
Key outcomes include increased belief in climate change, support for mitigation policies, and willingness to share climate information. The Work for Environmental Protection Task (WEPT) was applied to measure participants’ effort and commitment towards environmental protection.
An accessible web tool, the Climate Intervention Webapp, allows users to explore the impact of interventions on different demographics. This tool is designed to disseminate information and facilitate analysis across various socio-economic variables.
Exploring Intervention Strategies
Conducted between July 2022 and July 2023, the data collection aimed to maximize the utility of gathered information. Participants in the control condition responded to additional variables such as trust in climate scientists and second-order climate beliefs.
We explored interventions’ effectiveness across socio-political variables, individualism vs. collectivism, among others. The intervention tournament ranked 11 unique interventions, selected for their practicality and theoretical importance.
- Beliefs: Strengthening belief in climate change is a vital precursor to action.
- Policy Support: Public backing is crucial for policy adoption.
- Social Media: Sharing information is key for spreading climate awareness.
These interventions were designed to be globally applicable, with a focus on ensuring relevance for dependent variables and theoretical support from previous work.
The Role of Collaboration
In 2021, a call for collaboration was announced, inviting researchers to contribute by collecting data, proposing interventions, or providing financial support. This effort was aimed at reducing costs and establishing a short survey process, requiring interventions to be under five minutes long.
The intervention tournament received 36 submissions, narrowed down to 11 feasible ones. Collaborators were invited to rank these interventions based on practical support and theoretical value. This feedback was crucial in shaping the study’s final design.
All interventions underwent rigorous review, receiving feedback for improvement. Expert researchers critiqued each intervention’s implementation, ensuring they aligned with relevant theoretical work. This collaborative process was essential for refining the study.
By May 2022, the final version of the study was piloted with participants across the United States. Collaborators worldwide were provided with instructions for translating and adapting the study to their respective countries.
Data Compilation and Cleaning
The data cleaning process was meticulous, with individual datasets from each collaboration team being scrutinized. All translations and adaptations were carefully checked to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Participants had to pass attention checks and demonstrate understanding of the WEPT task to be included in the dataset. The dataset aims to provide a comprehensive view for researchers interested in analyzing treatment effects within the sample.
Overall, the dataset includes a diverse range of participants, offering insights into treatment effects across different demographics. The focus on detailed cleaning ensures reliable and usable data for future research.
Ethics approval was obtained for all data collection efforts, ensuring the research adhered to high ethical standards. This collaborative project highlights the importance of global cooperation in understanding and addressing climate change.

Great read, but I’m always skeptical of these “shocking trends”. Let’s hope it’s more than just hype this time!

So, when do we get to see the detailed data? I’m ready to dive into those socio-economic variables!
madison_legend
Fascinating! But how do they ensure the interventions are relevant across such diverse cultures?

Thank you for sharing these insights! The climate intervention web app sounds like a game-changer for policy support.

This is amazing work, but I’m curious about the interventions. Which one showed the most unexpected results?

Wow, 63 countries! π That’s some serious data collection. How long did it take to analyze all that info?
