Recent examples include the Pacific Northwest heatwave of 2021, where temperatures exceeded previous records by significant margins. Similarly, the U.K. experienced 40°C (104°F) temperatures in summer 2022, surpassing the previous record by a substantial margin.
These events underscore the fact that the true impact of global warming becomes evident only after several decades, yet our climate is changing too swiftly for this method to be effective anymore.
Embracing Uncertainty
To better grasp these extremes, scientists use ensembles—multiple runs of the same model with slight variations to show a range of possible outcomes. These ensembles can reveal potential extreme events that might not occur immediately but are nonetheless possible.
For instance, ensemble forecasts predicted 40°C (104°F) in the U.K. before the July 2022 heatwave, indicating the current climate’s potential for such extremes. Even if it hadn’t happened, its appearance in models highlighted the new reality.
Later forecasts suggested such temperatures on multiple consecutive days, which would have posed unprecedented risks to public health and infrastructure. This scenario was quickly forgotten but serves as a crucial warning.
Although it remains uncertain whether these models accurately represent the processes involved in extreme heat, we must heed their warnings and prepare accordingly.
