Global Hunger: A Growing Crisis
Last year, one in eleven people worldwide faced hunger, and a third of the global population struggled to afford a healthy diet. These alarming statistics illustrate a troubling trend: the goal of eradicating hunger is not only unmet but regressing.
Data from a recent United Nations report highlights the intertwined nature of food insecurity and climate change. As global crises intensify, these issues no longer exist in isolation but are increasingly interconnected.
Máximo Torero Cullen, chief economist of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, emphasized the escalating risks posed by climate change on our agrifood systems. He described the situation as a human rights issue that is only growing worse.
Torero condemns this crisis as “an unacceptable situation” that society cannot afford to ignore. The economic and moral implications of inaction are dire, affecting millions worldwide.
The Impact of Climate Change
The number of people facing chronic undernourishment has surged, with 152 million more individuals affected compared to 2019. This setback is reminiscent of the last major global food crisis in 2008 and 2009, pushing equitable food access back by 15 years.
Climate change is a significant driver of this crisis, second only to conflict. It disrupts food production and supply chains through extreme weather events, promotes the spread of diseases and pests, and causes mass migration.
In low-income nations, 71.5% of residents struggle to buy nutritious food. In stark contrast, only 6.3% face similar challenges in wealthy countries. This disparity highlights the unequal impact of climate change on food security.

Consequences of Inaction

In Africa, countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe have already declared states of disaster due to ongoing droughts. Long lines for food and quotas on purchases are becoming common sights, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Despite significant spending by governments and organizations, there is little clarity on how these funds are used. The UN report calls for a universal definition of financing for food security to ensure effective resource allocation.
Experts argue that the global nutrition targets set for 2030 under the Sustainable Development Goals are overly ambitious. Realistic measures must be adopted to address the root causes of hunger and food insecurity.
A Call to Action
Nemat Hajeebhoy, chief of nutrition for UNICEF Nigeria, stresses the importance of collective action. Governments, NGOs, and the private sector must collaborate to tackle the underlying causes of hunger and malnutrition.
Hajeebhoy warns that without concerted efforts, vulnerable women and children will continue to suffer the most. “What keeps me up at night is the numbers I’m seeing,” she says, highlighting the dire consequences of inaction.
As human beings, we need food to survive. The inability to access adequate nutrition leads to sickness and death, making it imperative to address these issues urgently.
