The Stark Reality of Climate Change

Growing up in Vermont, I enjoyed the outdoors without worrying about climate threats. Today, the scenario is drastically different. The climate crisis is no longer a distant issue but a daily reality that impacts our lives profoundly.

My children face a different Vermont, one fraught with extreme weather events and health hazards. It’s evident that we must transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources to safeguard our communities.

July 11th was a wake-up call. As I dealt with Lyme disease, news of flash flooding devastated our town. Homes and roads vanished overnight, leaving behind a trail of loss and destruction that is hard to comprehend.

Witnessing friends and neighbors lose everything was heart-wrenching. The sense of déjà vu was strong as we marked the anniversary of last year’s catastrophic floods with another disaster.

Community Resilience and Action

Despite the destruction, our community’s response was inspiring. People came together to clear roads, muck out basements, and donate supplies. The local farmer’s market transformed into a mutual aid event, complete with a brass band!

The solidarity and determination were palpable as everyone put their lives on hold to help each other. Yet, with more rain on the horizon, the cycle of volunteer efforts continues, highlighting the need for lasting solutions.

Our community’s strength is commendable, but it’s clear that we need to do more. Reducing the impact of the climate crisis requires organized action and systemic change, not just reactive measures.

Key actions our utilities should take include:

  • Incentivizing weatherization and community solar and wind projects.
  • Investing in clean energy solutions like heat pumps and thermal networks.
  • Phasing out polluting fossil-fuel plants and advocating for stricter policies.

Challenging the Status Quo

Despite Vermont’s climate-related headlines, our utilities persist in harmful practices. They promote misleading “green” solutions that still contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. It’s time to shift to genuinely clean and affordable energy.

Utilities should prioritize supporting communities in climate-smart rebuilding efforts. This includes incentivizing sustainable projects and phasing out outdated infrastructure that harms the environment.

Policies must evolve to protect ratepayers and reduce peak energy use. Shutting down inefficient plants and disqualifying false solutions from clean heat credits are vital steps.

On August 10, Vermonters will demand urgent action from utilities and elected officials. This event, part of a national week of action, underscores the need for a clean energy future. Join us and learn more at 350vt.org.

A Call to Action

I can’t return to the Vermont of my childhood, but I can fight for a better future for my kids. Organizing and demanding climate justice is crucial. Every effort counts in mitigating the climate crisis and protecting our beautiful state.

Our collective action can drive significant change. We must hold utilities accountable and push for sustainable energy solutions. Vermont’s future depends on our commitment to reducing the climate emergency.

Join us in calling for a cleaner, safer environment. Together, we can make a difference. Let’s harness our community’s momentum for meaningful climate action and justice.
