Glaciologist Bernhard Zagel has issued a stark warning: glaciers in Salzburg have lost half their ice mass over the past 25 years. This dramatic reduction highlights the urgent need to address climate change.

Currently, glacier researchers and hydrologists are studying the glaciers in Salzburg. Although detailed data is still being collected, initial observations indicate another year of significant ice loss.

According to Zagel, the rate of ice loss is staggering. He explains that with eight to nine hours of sunshine, glaciers can lose about ten centimeters of ice daily.

The heavy snowfall in the Austrian Tauern mountains until late spring did little to counteract this melting, especially at elevations around 3000 meters.

Dramatic Ice Loss Over Decades

Thirty years ago, the ice lake on Sonnblickkees was just beginning to form. Today, the area where ice once stood thick is now exposed rock, with the glacier edge retreating 600 meters.

Zagel points out that the evidence overwhelmingly supports the impact of the greenhouse effect on this rapid melting. He notes the difficulty in proving otherwise given the current climate trends.

The Stubacher Sonnblickkees, situated at 2,700 meters, has lost 45 million cubic meters of ice in the past 25 years. This represents half of its total mass.

Experts predict that in another 10 to 15 years, these glaciers might be reduced to mere patches of ice, if visible at all.
