In a notable event, a waterspout in Greece picked up a boat and hurled it through the air, tragically killing a young boy. Another recent incident in Italy saw a tourist boat capsized, resulting in multiple deaths. Such occurrences highlight the lethal potential of these marine tornadoes.

Recent studies indicate a correlation between warmer sea surface temperatures and increased waterspout activity. A 2022 study revealed that waterspouts are more likely to occur when sea temperatures exceed 23 degrees Celsius. With global ocean temperatures reaching unprecedented levels, these conditions are becoming more common.

Last year marked the warmest year on record for the ocean, with temperatures consistently breaking records. This prolonged heatwave has been linked to more frequent and intense marine weather phenomena, including waterspouts and Mediterranean hurricanes, or “medicanes.”

Luca Mercalli of the Italian Meteorological Society emphasized the role of warmer oceans in energizing vertical winds, contributing to the formation of waterspouts. He noted, “Warmer oceans have more energy and more humidity to transfer to the atmosphere, the most important fuels for storms.”

The Future of Waterspouts in a Warming World

The sinking of the Bayesian highlights the urgent need for improved early-warning systems and enhanced research into waterspouts. As ocean temperatures continue to rise, the frequency and severity of these events are expected to increase, posing significant risks to coastal communities and marine activities.

Recent data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service indicated that sea surface temperatures near Italy reached almost 30 degrees Celsius, significantly higher than the average. This heatwave created a perfect storm for waterspout formation, leading to the tragic incident involving the Bayesian.

In the days leading up to the yacht’s sinking, a series of waterspouts were documented off Italy’s western coast. The combination of cold air from the Alps and exceptionally warm sea surface temperatures created ideal conditions for these phenomena. As a result, twenty-eight waterspouts were observed between August 17 and August 20.

Experts like Wade Szilagyi believe that the increase in reported waterspouts is partly due to more people capturing them on camera. However, he also acknowledges that climate change is extending the waterspout season and making these events more frequent. “With the increased water temperatures, that’s probably resulting in more frequent tornadic waterspouts,” Szilagyi explained.
