Pink Parrot Media Acquires Global Rights
Pink Parrot Media has secured the global distribution rights for David Baute’s animated film, “Black Butterflies.” The acquisition follows a successful summer festival circuit, including a premiere at the Annecy Contrechamp competition. This move positions Pink Parrot as a key player in the animated film industry.
The company is actively engaging with worldwide distributors, having already inked a deal with Spain’s Sideral Cinema. The collaboration with Sideral, known for co-producing Spain’s Oscar submission “Saturn Returns,” highlights the growing interest in climate-focused narratives.
Set to release in Spanish theaters on December 5, “Black Butterflies” will first premiere domestically on October 4 at the Sitges Festival. The event will be graced by director David Baute, screenwriter Yaiza Berrocal, and other key creatives behind the film.
Future festival destinations for the film include Animasyros, DocsMx, and the Manchester Animation Festival. These screenings will further broaden its reach and impact.
A Cinematic Exploration of Climate Change
“Black Butterflies” is a poignant 2D-animated documentary addressing climate change, inspired by Baute’s earlier live-action work, “Climate Exodus.” The film integrates personal stories of women climate refugees from Kenya, India, and the Caribbean, offering a deeply emotional narrative.
Baute and screenwriter Yaiza Berrocal collaborated with art director María Pulido and production designer José Sanchez Alonso to create this compelling feature. Their combined efforts have resulted in a visually stunning and narratively powerful film.
The film’s soundtrack features an original song by Grammy-winning Panamanian artist Ruben Blades, adding a layer of commercial appeal and cultural resonance. This collaboration enriches the film’s emotional and auditory experience.
Supported by various Spanish and Catalan entities, including RTVE and 3Cat, “Black Butterflies” has received significant financial backing. The involvement of these organizations underscores the importance of the film’s message.
Key Partnerships and Support
The film is produced by Spain’s Ikiru Films and Tinglado Film, in collaboration with Catalan companies Anangu Group and CCMA, and Panama’s Tunche Films. This diverse production team highlights the global effort behind the film.
Financial backing came from multiple sources:
- Spanish pubcaster RTVE
- State TV operator 3Cat in Catalonia
- Public Television of the Canary Islands
Additionally, the project received funding from Spain’s Ministry of Culture-ICAA and support from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Island Council of Tenerife.
Edmon Roch, the producer at Ikiru, expressed excitement about working with Pink Parrot Media. He praised Pink Parrot’s experience and dedication, noting their enthusiasm since the Annecy presentation.
VP and partner at Pink Parrot Media, Tania Pinto Da Cunha, highlighted the film’s ability to raise awareness about climate change. She emphasized its potential to remind audiences of the human cost of global warming and the importance of solidarity.
Distributors’ Enthusiasm and Future Prospects
Roberto Butragueño, CEO of Sideral Cinema, shared his pride in distributing “Black Butterflies” in Spain. He commended the film’s quality and its timely exploration of critical issues.
The film’s striking visuals, powerful narrative, and unique animation style have garnered attention and praise. These elements combine to create a memorable cinematic experience that resonates with audiences.
With its upcoming release and festival appearances, “Black Butterflies” is set to make a significant impact. The film’s exploration of climate change through personal stories offers a fresh and engaging perspective.
As the film continues to gain traction, it promises to contribute to the broader conversation on climate change and its effects. Its success reflects the growing demand for stories that address global challenges and inspire action.
