Gen Z’s Economic Concerns Drive 2024 Elections

The upcoming 2024 Presidential Election sees economic issues at the forefront for Generation Z. With inflation, cost of living, and jobs that pay a living wage being critical concerns, young voters are keenly aware of their financial futures. Their participation could significantly influence election outcomes.

Research from the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University highlights that economic stability is a top priority. Young voters recognize the importance of financial security in shaping their lives and the broader economy.

Ohioans will soon vote for a new president, a pivotal U.S. Senate race, and several state-level positions. The Ohio Senate race between Republican Bernie Moreno and incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown is especially significant for its potential impact from young voters.

“We must ensure all communities have a voice,” said a CIRCLE representative. The importance of engaging youth in the political process cannot be overstated, as their unique perspectives and experiences are invaluable.

Top Priorities for Young Voters

According to CIRCLE’s poll, the following issues are top priorities for youth aged 18-34:

  • Cost of living/inflation — 53%
  • Jobs that pay a living wage — 28%
  • Gun violence prevention — 26%

Reproductive rights and climate change are also significant concerns. For instance, Delaney McCullough, a sophomore at Ohio State University, prioritizes reproductive rights, reflecting the diverse issues that mobilize young voters.

Historical events such as the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the Parkland school shooting have driven Gen Z’s civic engagement. These events underscore the generation’s readiness to participate actively in shaping their future.

Increased voter turnout among young people could reshape the political landscape. In 2020, approximately 50% of voters aged 18-29 participated, a notable increase from previous elections.

The Role of Social Media and Political Engagement

Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic nominee, has garnered substantial support among young people. If the election were held today, she would likely receive about 56% of the youth vote, illustrating young voters’ influence.

Social media platforms like TikTok have become crucial tools for engaging young voters. However, experts warn against relying solely on these platforms, emphasizing the need for comprehensive outreach strategies.

Young voters are less likely to affiliate with a political party, making targeted outreach essential. Efforts to engage this demographic could break the cycle of low voter turnout traditionally seen among youth.

“Campaigns must invest in reaching out to young people,” said a CIRCLE spokesperson. Authentic engagement strategies are necessary to ensure young voters feel represented and motivated to participate.

Challenges and Opportunities in Ohio Voting

As of May, only 32% of Ohio’s 18-year-olds are registered to vote, compared to 78% of those aged 45 and older. This disparity highlights the need for increased voter registration efforts among young people.

Warren County leads with the highest percentage of 18-year-olds registered to vote at 35.5%. Encouraging young people to register and vote is crucial for a representative democracy.

Issues like mental health, climate change, and housing affordability uniquely affect young people. Their voices are essential in creating solutions that address these challenges effectively.

Recent legislative changes in Ohio have made it harder for out-of-state college students to vote, posing additional challenges. Despite these hurdles, the enthusiasm among young voters remains high.

Why is it so hard for out-of-state college students to vote in Ohio? That seems unfair. 😤
