A Passion for Art Turned into Activism
In my youth, art consumed my life. At 16, I was entranced by the vibrant world of paintings, dreaming of a future immersed in museums. The 1980s were a time of artistic revelation, and I was captivated by masterpieces like Théodore Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa.
Witnessing the historical impact of art, I was struck by its power to expose societal corruption. Géricault’s work revealed the dark underbelly of political incompetence, showcasing the stark reality of government failures. His shocking depiction of a shipwrecked corpse challenged societal norms and left a lasting impression on me.
Art’s ability to provoke change became evident as I realized its potential to uncover hidden truths. Géricault’s painting, initially scorned, gained recognition posthumously for its bold statement against corruption. This realization ignited a desire in me to use art as a force for social transformation.
Despite my love for art, an unseen narrative of corruption was unfolding. Fossil-fuel companies were quietly profiting at the expense of the environment. Their actions went unnoticed as they pursued wealth, leading to catastrophic consequences for the planet.
From Preservation to Protest
For over 25 years, I dedicated myself to conserving art. My roles ranged from curator to conservation cleaner, ensuring the longevity of priceless objects. Whether it was escorting a Van Dyck or caring for a simple shoe, my focus was on preserving history.
But my efforts felt futile as I realized the world’s imminent environmental collapse. The relentless destruction by fossil-fuel executives, enabled by politicians and industry leaders, threatened the very future I aimed to protect.
I faced a stark choice: continue preserving art or confront the climate crisis. Realizing the urgency, I chose activism, leaving behind the art world to challenge the forces driving environmental destruction.
- Art became a reflection of societal issues.
- Preservation felt insignificant amid climate threats.
- Activism offered a path to meaningful change.
The Art World’s Dilemma
As climate change looms, the art world must reassess its priorities. While exhibitions celebrate historical milestones, the reality of climate breakdown demands immediate attention. We cannot ignore the pressing issues of today while clinging to past glories.
Fires and floods now threaten cultural treasures, demanding a shift in focus. The art world must leverage its influence to highlight the cost of inaction. By embracing truth-telling and bold action, we can expose the dire consequences of global corruption.
The suffragettes fought for change, and now it’s our turn. The time for complacency is over. We must embrace the revolutionary spirit of the artists we admire, using our platforms to challenge the status quo and demand accountability.
My imprisonment for climate action is a testament to the urgency of the cause. I choose to stand against destructive forces, even at the cost of my freedom. The time to act is now, before our cherished culture is lost to the tides of climate collapse.
A Call for Radical Change
The art world holds immense power to influence societal change. As custodians of culture, we must wield our influence wisely, using it to address the critical issues of our time. The climate crisis demands our attention and action.
Art has historically been a catalyst for transformation. From challenging political corruption to inspiring social movements, it has the power to provoke and inspire. We must harness this power to address the current environmental challenges.
As I sit in prison, I reflect on the choices that led me here. I choose activism over complacency, recognizing the urgent need for change. The art world must join this fight, using its voice to demand a sustainable future.
Our planet’s survival depends on our actions. It’s time for the art world to step up, to challenge the status quo, and to embrace a new era of responsibility. The stakes are high, and the time for action is now.

How do you reconcile the loss of freedom with the impact of your activism? That’s such a big sacrifice!

Was it worth it? Trading a life of art for the uncertainty of activism and prison seems like a huge leap.

Isn’t it ironic that art, which is supposed to preserve history, is now being used to fight against those who threaten our future?
