Unprecedented Weather Events in Sicily

This summer, the Mediterranean Sea experienced record-breaking temperatures that contributed to a rare and powerful storm, leading to the tragic sinking of a superyacht off Sicily’s coast. Such extreme weather events are expected to become more frequent and intense as the climate crisis worsens, according to Italian scientists.

Authorities have confirmed one fatality and are continuing to search for six missing individuals. Among them are a well-known British tech entrepreneur and his 18-year-old daughter. The incident occurred when the 56-meter yacht, Bayesian, capsized in the early hours of Monday.

The yacht was hit by a tornadic waterspout, a swirling column of air and water mist similar to a land tornado, off the coast of Porticello, near Palermo. The Mediterranean’s sea temperatures have soared to 30°C, three degrees above average, exacerbating these severe weather conditions.

During two months of consecutive heatwaves, the Mediterranean reached these unprecedented temperatures, culminating in a sudden cold air blast and heavy storms across Italy. The sea surface temperature around Sicily was recorded between 27.3°C and 30.5°C, intensifying the storm’s energy.

Scientific Insights and Rising Risks

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society, explained that the elevated sea temperatures generated enormous amounts of energy, making the storms much more intense. Thirty years ago, such an event might have brought winds of 100km/h, but today it’s 150km/h due to the higher sea temperatures.

Bayesian had departed from Milazzo on 14 August, exploring the Aeolian Islands and Cefalù before mooring 700 meters off Porticello. Bad weather interrupted its journey, and the powerful waterspout hit a restricted area, sparing a nearby boat.

Mercalli noted that anyone in that precise location at that time would have faced the extreme conditions. Despite preparation, the speed and intensity of such events make timely reactions difficult.

Roberto Danavaro, a marine biologist, emphasized the direct connection between this summer’s anomalous sea temperatures and the storm. He highlighted several recent tornado occurrences near Italy’s coastline, including in the Adriatic and off Liguria.

Mounting Evidence of Climate Change

In May last year, a similar violent storm capsized a tourist boat on Lake Maggiore, resulting in four fatalities. The frequency of tornadoes and Mediterranean hurricanes has increased over the past 10 to 15 years, with more expected in the coming months due to high temperatures.

Sottocorona, another meteorologist, described the waterspout that struck Bayesian as “the extreme of the extreme.” He attributed this to unprecedented Mediterranean temperatures, which create instability. Events once considered rare are now becoming more common, signaling a clear sign of climate change.

Additionally, the high sea temperature has triggered the widespread proliferation of marine mucilage in the Adriatic, a slimy substance formed by various microalgae. This phenomenon has negatively impacted fishers this summer.
