The Tornado Chronicles

In “Twisters,” the narrative whirls through numerous subplots within its 122-minute span. This summer blockbuster, brimming with both intellect and action, showcases the perilous dance between nature and humanity. Despite the clear depiction of nature’s wrath, the film notably avoids the phrase “climate change.”

Director Lee Isaac Chung emphasizes an absence of overt messaging. He believes that movies should not preach but instead reflect reality. Chung stated, “Films are meant to be a reflection of the world, not a message.”

Interestingly, there’s a scientific basis for this omission. Experts are still uncertain about how climate change influences tornado formations, making it a complex topic to address conclusively in cinema.

However, evidence is mounting that climate change may be impacting tornado patterns. Recent research suggests that supercell thunderstorms, which often spawn tornadoes, are becoming more common outside the traditional Tornado Alley.

Storm Chasing and Reality

One of the film’s characters, Javi, an entrepreneurial storm chaser, remarks, “We’ve never seen tornadoes like this before.” This line resonates with the growing unpredictability of these natural disasters.

The narrative focuses on increasingly destructive tornadoes ravaging urban areas in Oklahoma, showcasing the harsh reality faced by many communities today.

Chung highlights that while the film shows the changing landscape, it stops short of mentioning climate change directly. The character Cathy, a farmer, notes the increased frequency of storms but avoids attributing it to climate change.

Chung reiterates his stance on cinema’s role, stating, “We’re showing the reality on the ground without creating a feeling of preaching a message.”

A Personal Connection

Chung’s personal experiences deeply influenced “Twisters.” Raised on a farm in Arkansas, his childhood encounters with severe weather left a lasting impression on him.

He aimed to capture the awe and wonder of nature’s power, not just the fear. “It’s about revering and honoring the beauty of that power,” he explained.

The film’s production faced real-life challenges, filming in Oklahoma during tornado season. The unpredictable weather added an authentic layer to the movie’s atmosphere.

Actor Anthony Ramos shared, “One moment the sky is clear, and the next, a storm descends upon you. It’s surreal.”

Chasing Tornadoes

Glen Powell, who plays a social media-savvy storm chaser, noted the local pride in weather knowledge in Oklahoma. “Everyone talks like a meteorologist,” he mentioned.

The film featured real storm chasers as extras, fostering genuine connections. Powell shared that they often receive messages from these storm chasers about impending storms.

Despite the excitement, Chung cautioned against hobbyist storm chasing. He hopes the film inspires viewers to appreciate the power of nature from a safe distance.

Chung concludes, “Watch ‘Twisters’ instead of chasing storms yourself.” The film releases in UK theaters on July 17 and US theaters on July 19.

The film sounds exciting, but I wish they addressed the climate crisis more directly. Still gonna watch it!

Did anyone else feel like Javi’s character was a bit over the top? 😂

What’s the point of making a movie about extreme weather and not talking about climate change???

Why does the director avoid the term “climate change”? Seems like a missed opportunity.

  • Great review! But why avoid mentioning climate change when it’s such a hot topic? 🌪️
